I dragged myself out of bed and went to my one class. Then came back and slept for forever. Lunch and dinner I can't remember. Meatballs and spinach pizza possibly? Resume sleeping. We went out to Camborio because it was free.
Friday, we lounged around all day. Lunch was "hamburgers" and beans and dinner was green beans. After dinner, we decided that we would take a day trip to Malaga the next day so it was early to bed for us.

22-23 Feb, Tuesday/Wednesday
Tuesday
Not much to say about this day....I had my one class, lunch was SWEDISH MEATBALLS! and dinner was more meatballs and a HUGE plate of broccoli. After lunch, Rebecca and I walked around to go to a cafe to do our homework so that turned into also getting coffee and tostada mixta (toast w/ butter and jam) but we did get our homework done. After dinner, I went to sleep relatively early.
I forgot to mention on Monday's post that Monday night we booked our plane tickets to Ireland! We'll be in Dublin from March 25 to the 27th!!!!
Wednesday
I survived my classes yesterday, somehow. Lunch was something I do not remember along with more meatballs (yay!) - Soup I think? Not positive. After lunch, instead of sleeping I decided to watch a movie. For dinner, we had meatballs (gotta love them), a hamburger - literally a ham patty, and some egg/spinach thing. And aaaaafter dinner, we went out (because the clubs are free on Wednesdays and we are thrifty). I'm getting to old for this nightlife! I don't know how the Spaniards do it! Before we went to the discoteca, we went to one of the "best" tapas bars in Granada - La bella y la bestia - and got mojitos with....free tapas! It was a plate of rice and potato chips with a ham and cheese sandwich. Delicious!

Monday Monday, Feb 21
Waking up yesterday morning was rough for some reason. I just wanted to sleep all day. But instead, I went to my THREE LOVELY CLASSES and paid attention.
Lunch was....this garbanzo bean codfish stew/soup. I'm pretty sure they were chickpeas though. It wasn't too bad surprisingly!
I finally went out to buy an iPod shuffle after everyone woke up from their naps. We went to the bakery again after a dinner of....something I can't remember at the moment, oh! Turkey and french fries! And then we got lost in the city again at night, just walking off our dinner!

Sunday February 20th.
I forgot to mention that we got lost in Granada on Saturday. We literally walked around the whole town probably.
Sunday we woke up at 11 for breakfast. We went to meet Rebecca's friend & co. for coffee before they left. Coffee (DUNKIN DONUTS!!!!) turned into walking around the city, seeing bums, discovering places that we didn't even know existed, and getting tapas for lunch. We went to some hole in the wall bar - I think it was a heavy metal bar from the music, and had beer and tapas for lunch. The tapas we got were french fries, meatballs and croquetas - not bad for a cheap lunch. We resumed our wandering around Granada and stumbling upon that delicious ice cream place again. This time I behaved - no dairy for me!!! - just lemon sorbet. After even more walking around, it was time for our new friends to leave so we went to the park and soaked up the sun for a few hours before going home for dinner.
Dinner was this lentil stew/soup and it wasn't too bad! I don't think I forgot anything else about this day.

19 Saturday!
We woke up around 10am for a day of shopping!! Surprisingly, I behaved myself and only bought earrings and a bag for school. We decided to eat lunch while we were out and ended up getting kebabs. Kebabs here are essentially chicken/any type of meat, lots of veggies (and olives, ew), sour cream and cheese all wrapped up in a pita that is lightly toasted-ish. DELICIOUS. Best 3 euro I've spent here...until we decided to get ice cream too. I had a cherry ice cream/lemon sherbert mix which was also delicious. I guess the kebab was better though....
When we got back to the apartment, dinner was PIZZA (yessss I am a pizza addict now) but I couldn't eat that much because my stomach felt off.
We decided to go out to el Camborio again - since we would get in free - and also to see Rebecca's friends before they left to go back to Murcia. It was raining. We took a cab there, were there for about an hour, took a cab to the next free club, stood in line at the club for 20 min and then when we reached the front, were told that the "free list" was closed. I cursed out the bouncer (in Spanish) and we decided to just cut our losses and go home. Going home meant walking in the rain. GOOD THING I WORE MY PEACOAT. Surprisingly, it makes a good umbrella!

18 Feb, Friday!
After going to sleep at 730am, we woke up around 12-1pm, semi-rested. One of my roommate's friends was visiting from Murcia with his program so we met up with him around 4 to show him and his friends around. They ditched this HUGE group tour to come with us so we miraculously found our way back at the Mirador de San Nicolas - the place with the best views of the Alhambra in the Albaycin. It was so relaxing just to sit around for an hour or so and take in the pretty view of the Alhambra and the mountains.
We made our way back down and decided to walk around and get coffee with 2 of the guys. "Coffee" turned into crepes and churros con chocolate. We went to Café Fútbol again.....and Brittany and I split a chocolate crepe which was DELICIOUS.
Dinner at home was beef stew (just like you make, Mom!)
After dinner, we went out for tapas - just to Poe - where I got this spicy pork stew, also delicious! Because we were so tired fromt eh night before, we decided to just call it a night at 2am and get some rest.

Thursday Thursday, 17 Feb.
Art history class was nice. I came home and slept....a lot. Lunch and dinner weren't too memorable - I was just happy to sleep.
We ended up going out to El Camborio - which is a discoteca out in the Albaycin with views of the Alhambra at night. We got in for free and it was an okay time - just too many Americans and not enough room to move. Our night ended at 730am (after walking 1.5miles home) when we arrived home in time to eat breakfast and fall asleep!
But the views from the disco were breathtaking. The Alhambra was all lit up!

16 Feb. Wednesday!
Woke up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy. Just kidding, but I actually felt great. Only a few sniffles.
After our first class, I went with my roommates + Esme to Cafe Fútbol for some coffee/tea, which was delicioussss. I went back to school (after an hour and a half break) for my last 2 classes - that I missed on Monday. I showed both teachers my note and they were understanding. One teacher even had my name written on the handouts that she gave out the last class. So nice! What wasn't nice was walking back in the rain...not amused.
Lunch was a huuuuge plate of broccoli, potatoes and chicken. I took a super long nap afterwards, which was wonderful even though my sleeping habits are back to normal.
Since it was the first day that I felt well enough to go out (EVEN THOUGH IT WAS STILL RAINING) - we ended up going to a nearby bar to catch the end of the Arsenal/Barcelona game. I finally got my tapas! Croquetas, my favoriiiiiite (Mom/Dad, tell Colleen she'll love them).
I was in bed by 1230am and it was wonderful!
Smiles from the girl formerly known as sick!

15 Feb, Tuesday
I woke up feeling a-okay, actually on time! I had my favorite class! And then I came home to sleep/blog about the weekend.
Lunch, I do not remember. Chicken and potatoes?
More sleeping. JUST KIDDING I WENT SHOPPING. And got a dress and two shirts for super cheap.
Oh, it was raining that day too :(
Dinner was.....I don't remember either - I'll start taking better note!
And then I was up until 2am with my friend trying to fix my iPod over the internet...it failed :(

Valentine's day. Blech.
Well. I woke up Monday morning feeling absolutely LOVELY (not) - in reality I woke up late because I was up all night coughing. But I made it to my 830 class. Once class ended at 10, I made the executive decision to go home and sleep/wait for the doctor's appointment email that I sent that morning.
Lunch wasn't too memorable. But I had my doctor's appointment at 430. One of the people from the program came with me to translate since I'm not fluent in medical talk. The doctor was....a jerk, busy typing on his computer and answering his phone. He literally only looked in my ears and throat, felt my sinuses and listened to me breathe. Then decided to prescribe me 4 medicines....
That visit cost 50 euro. The medicines I picked up at the farmacia cost 50 euro. Being sick is expensive in Spain. Especially when I get a medicine that could potentially mess up my liver (kudos to Mom & Dr. Patti for telling me not to take it). BUT I did take the other 3 medicines which started helping superbly.
I can't remember dinner except for the joy of finally taking an antibiotic.
OH. Did I mention I found out my iPod was broken that day? Yup. Somehow it decided not to work anymore.

Fotos de la Alhambra!
Orange trees are everywhere in Granada and the Alhambra is no exception!
The view of the Albayzin (Arab neighborhood). I live in a storybook!
DO YOU SEE THAT SNOW ON THE MOUNTAINS????
A view of Granada graced by my presence!
El Palacio Generalife - basically the "vacation" home of the sultans. And yes, we walked ALL THE WAY over there.
12-13 Feb. Saturday/Sunday
Wellllll. Friday night's sleep was nothing but coughing until about 7am. I woke up Saturday afternoon and promptly went to the farmacia to get cough syrup. It helped...but not a lot. I don't know what lunch was. BUT dinner was pizza pizza pizzaa. So delicious. I stayed in while my other two roommates went out.
Sunday I woke up around 12, after a long night of coughing, and ate breakfast. Our program's trip to the Alhambra was that day but I wasn't sure if I would go since I felt like crap. After a hot shower, I figured I should get out of the apartment so I went. I took the bus up to the Alhambra with the other sick people from my program - such a smart move. It was so beautifullll. But so much walking. Surprisingly, I survived - probably by being armed with tissues, cough drops and water. Our señora made us sandwiches to take since we were missing lunch - I FINALLY GOT MY TUNA FISH! Yum! I'll do an entry after this with pictures of the Alhambra!
Dinner was soup, calamari (hey dad!) and fish sticks - not too bad. I was not prepared for another night of coughing though :(

11 Feb. TGIF?
I woke up this morning feeling like death: no voice & loads of coughing. I made the executive decision to skip my program's day trip to Ronda (I plan on going again when it gets warmer) so my plan for today was to just eat breakfast and sleep.
After breakfast, I ended up sleeping from 830-530....a good 9 hours. I woke up to eat the sandwich my señora made me for the day trip and then stumbled out of my room...to find soup and sweet potato waiting for me. YUM.
I'm just laying low today - coughin up all that mucus and stuff. Someone told me that I have the "Welcome to Spain" sickness - how wonderful :(

Thurs 10 Feb.
Well. Class was nothing out of the ordinary yesterday morning. I went home and immediately went back to sleep....for a good 3-4 hours. Lunch was spinach and croquetas. After lunch, more sleep was had as well as a 10 minute long hot shower to open up my sinuses (I woke up Thursday morning feeling like one big ball of mucus)
We were at the post office at 8pm for churros con chocolate - to meet the rest of the people in our program (which involved us sitting at a table with everyone we already knew). After the delicious churros, we set off to find dinner which took longer than expected because one of my roommates specifically wanted a certain dish for dinner.....Oh, my dinner was hot tea if you care.
We ended up at Hannigans for karaoke - which was allllll american, but still fun. I had enough energy to stay out but because we only have 1 key between 3 people, we all had to leave at the same time (ugh)

Wednesday, 9 Feb.
Class yesterday was boring. I woke up feeling even crappier until I had my delicious TOAST WITH HONEY. We didn't do much in any of my classes. Our lunch was a fried egg and chicken which I devoured. (Dinner last night was like...a PLATE FULL OF BROCCOLI and pork kebabs that were naaaasty. I told my señora that I normally don't eat a lot of pork)
After lunch, I did NOT siesta for once! We went to the park (I'll post a picture later) and sat around for 2.5 hours after getting a delicious sweet from the bakery. I got my dose of vitamin D and we headed back once it started to get chilly. For dinner, we had potatoes with green peppers (so many vegetables, I LOVE IT) and while everyone else had pork, she gave me leftover chicken from earlier. KACHING.
Our idea after dinner was to go get tapas so we went down the notorious tapas street that our señora told us about. The first bar we went to had a sign out front that said 2 mojitos for 5.50euro. That was a steaaaaaaaal so we went in. The bartender was from London (WONDERFUL ACCENT) and he was super nice - even giving us free drinks.
I ended up running into 2 girls I know - one through a friend, the other from high school. They walked into the bar we were at! Such a small world!
After our tapas failure (we'll get some someday), we decided to go out and dance. Back to Granada10. We were only out until about 3-ish since we had class today at 830.
In hindsight, going out was probably not my smartest idea, but I'm only in Spain for a semester once. I will deal with my sinus infection, the Spanish way - SIESTAS

Things I miss about the US.
- Subway, with all of its vegetables
- Grilled cheese
- TIKKA MASALA AND NAAN
- Cheese pizza from Pizza Hut
- Tuna fish sandwiches - I'm realllly craving one.
- The abundance of soda - need my daily caffeine fix!
- My 10$/month gym membership that I have neglected.
- My family, I suppose..... (jk jk Mom/Dad/Colleen!)
- MY DROID. It's so frustrating not being able to check my email on the go!
- Shopping. I only have 2 pairs of jeans here....if I need to buy more, am I going to find my size? I DO NOT KNOW. WE SHALL SEE!
Class day #2 - TODAY!
I woke up late, but well rested, for a FREEZING 3 minute shower so I could get ready for my only class today - Art History in Spain, from 0830-1000. The prof seems nice and the class seems easy for now. I'm so excited for this class because of 307 being all about art last semester.
Oh, I forgot to mention I woke up with the worst sore throat EVER. I only had orange juice at breakfast until my Señora said I should eat toast with honey - I had 2 slices and it was heaven for my poor throat. I also bought a cup of tea at school so I wouldn't be hacking all over the classroom for 90 minutes.
Right now, I'm sitting in bed because I'm FREEZING, waiting for one of my roommates to come home - we only have 1 key between the 3 of us - kind of difficult.
OH.
In recent news, my trip to Morocco has been cancelled (thank you Egypt/Tunisia) BUT it has been changed to the Lagos trip (which I had paid extra for) BUT that extra payment for a trip is now for a trip to MALLORCA. Yes please! I am bummed about Morocco though - I wanted Indian food so baaaaaadly. (You better believe I will be pigging out on tikka masala and naan when I come home)

Classes! Monday, 7 Feb.
After a LOVELY (not) nap of 2-2.5 hours, we got up for our first day of class.
My first class, from 830-10 was Spanish Literature from the 19th & 20th centuries. It wasn't too bad. I think it will be pretty easy. My roommate Brittany is in this class with me woop woop!
Class #2 - 1130-1300: Grammar. Ay, Dios mio. This class doesn't seem too difficult but you know how I hate grammar. My roommate Rebecca is in this class with me so that helps.
Class #3 - 1300-1430: Composition/Oral. This profesora seems like a sweetheart. And my class is relatively small (~15 people). Luckily I've made friends in this class too!
I raced home after class to eat a lunch of soup, potatoes and acelga. Acelga is not spinach, it is CHARD. EW EW EW. But it was food, so I couldn't complain. I passed out for a good 2.5 hours to wake up for a dinner of HAM PATTIES. Not hamburgers. HAM. PATTIES. JAMÓN. and french fries - yumma. Oh and more soup - I love soup, especially when my throat is hurting like now.
And then, I went to sleep around 11 for day 2 of class!

Fri/Sat/Sun 4-6 Feb 2011
We didn't go out Thursday night so we ended up getting at least 12 hours of sleep. Friday we got our schedules. I already wrote about the meals.
We went out to one of the discotecas - Granada 10, after going to Poë - which was just on the news for being the best tapas bar in Granada, and the chupitería. Granda 10 was definitely interesting but it was nice to get out and dance. We ended up coming home at 4am and slept all day.
Saturday, we woke up late and had a late breakfast. After breakfast, we set out to explore Granada and find that tapas bar again. We got lost trying to find it but then decided to have Mexican food for lunch (it's better at Don Pablos, Dad). I forget what our dinner was, no wait! It was delicious - toasted ham and cheese sandwiches, vegetable pizza and hmm, soup probably. Dinner was so good - I majorly pigged out. Thennnn after a short siesta, we got ready at around midnight to go out. It was back to the chupitería and Granada10 - even though we wanted to go to el Camborio (the club in a cave that overlooks the Alhambra) but some party pooper that tagged along with us was whiny so we went back to Granada10. I had more fun that night but there were a lot of creepers there. We did meet up with a few people from our program and met some guy from Alabama - Grant from Alabama. My roommates and I took a taxi home at 730am. I never want to stay out that late "like the locals" again!
Sunday involved more sleeping in. I forget what the meals were - oh cauliflower and potatoes for dinner I think. I forget what lunch was - probably soup and something with french fries. We went to an Irish bar to watch the Superbowl but left during halftime because it was closing before the game ended. So we found a different Irish/English bar that was open until the game ended. Apparently it's illegal to be open past a certain hour on Sunday nights so the bar was risking their license and a hefty fine to keep all the Americans happy. I was THRILLED that Green Bay won because I obviously hate the Steelers. And I bonded with some random guy from Ohio about our hatred for the Steelers (an obvious Colts fan who hated the Ravens too, but the Steelers more).
We got back around 5 and passed out for a quick nap before our first day of class, which will be in a different post!

Thursday's dinner/lunch
Since we woke up late Thursday morning, we decided to tell Señora that we were going out to get lunch - tapas or bocadillos. We found a cute little cafe thing and I got a bocadillo of jamón serrano, queso and tomate. It was delicious!
Dinner last night was a fried egg, Chilean? rice, made with tomato, olive oil and some salt, and fried bananas. SO GOOD. We had tea afterwards because we were talking for forever. All three of us want to get our hair done while we're here and it turns out that for a cut and color, it's only 25euro. So cheap compared to home! She said I should get highlights or "reflejos" for my hair. And she has a friend that comes to her apartment to do her hair. Even better! She also told us about her children - a 30yr old son that works in the Embassy in Washington (maybe he helped me when I was there?) and a 27 yr old daughter that works in the discotecas in Barcelona. She is just so kind!
I don't write about breakfasts because it's always the same for me - cereal, toast w/ nutella, orange juice and coffee.

The Albaycin!
Despite walking up 329843290432 stairs, our tour today was actually helpful. And led us to the most amazing views I've seen so far in Granada.
This is a view of the Alhambra from the Mirador San Nicolas. So pretty!
MOUNTAINS. AND SNOW.
Me with my roommates Brittany & Rebecca.
Such a fun day. I think we walked about 5 miles today. No big deal.
Day 4 - More Orientations / Day 5 - Late morning
We had to meet at the post office at 8:30 am yesterday to take a bus to a school outside of the city so we could talk with Spaniards. It ended up being at this high school but we talked 45 min in english, 45 in spanish - kind of a speed dating language practice thing. The people we talked to were really nice - I got one person's email address and another's phone number. (Still no Enriques Mom) They said my Spanish was pretty good compared to some of the other people they talked to from the program (YAY!)
After all that talking, my throat was raw but luckily it was time to leave. We went to the main Universidad de Granada campus and had a late breakfast at this cafeteria place. And then we went on a tour of the city to see the 2 gyms we could get memberships at. Sorry but I'm not paying 25 or 50 euro/month to join a gym. We also saw Parque del Fernando Garcia Lorca - which is literally right around the corner from our apartment
Lunch was soup, tortilla española, onions?, and this meat pasta thing. Because the 2 other girls from UDelaware were leaving that night, Feli pulled out some lambrusco wine for their last meal. Then, I took the longest siesta of my life - around 3 hours or more. We all decided to stay in because we weren't feeling well, but after we woke up, we went downstairs and around the corner so Rebecca and I could get phones. Now I own this little dinky pay as you go phone and it won't let me upload a picture but it's a Nokia 1616. Y'all can google it.
We were back in time for a dinner of cauliflower and potatoes, which I couldn't even finish because I didn't feel well. But then, Señora pulled out some Argentine cake which I had to try - come on, it was chocolate. And it was delicious!
I went to sleep around 1. And woke up at 10 today because we don't have to be anywhere until 4pm for our tour of the Albaycin. So now we're trying to plan a trip to Belgium next weekend...which we can't do until we get our class schedules tomorrow morning.
Hasta luego, when I tell you about our Albaycin tour!

Day 3
We thought orientation this morning would be over relatively early....it started at 10 and ended at 2:15. We dipped out of there to make it home by 2:30 for lunch. I don't understand this program - they stress that we should be at each meal that our señora makes, saying lunch is normally from 2-3, but keep us past 2.....
Lunch was the first non-fried food meal! Soup, salad and chicken w/ potatoes and vegetables. Then I took a super long siesta because I felt gross. Dinner was delicioussss - Tortilla española, chorizo, cheese, MORE SALADA (YAY!) and fruit. We went downstairs to the bakery so Brittany could get a pastel. And now we're getting ready to go to the Chupiteria - some bar that sells 1 euro shots.

Our journey to find a tapas bar
Tonight was so great. After walking ALL over Granada to find a tapas bar that wasn’t deserted but not packed, we ended up walking back to a wine bar we had passed earlier.
We walked in and heard people speaking English so I was a little relieved. It turns out that they were from Catholic University and they were studying architecture in Barcelona but were here on a trip for a few days. Thennn we met two women from Brazil that were HILARIOUS.
One of the bartenders liked one of my roommates so we kept getting free wine and stayed past closing time. But my other roommate & I got to use the secret bathroom in the back (que bueno!) It was so hilarious! And it turns out that they live near us, on the same street so they walked us back to our apt to make sure we got back safely.
Tonight was the best 1.80euro that I’ve ever spent on 2 glasses of wine. I am 100% certain that we will go back to that bar again.
